Kenya’s new Constitution, which citizens overwhelmingly voted for through Wednesday’s peaceful referendum, aims to mitigate governmental corruption. It mandates a separation of the executive and legislature, the creation of a Senate (“sober second thought,” to borrow from Canada’s first Prime Minister John A. Maconald), slight devolution to regions, and ameliorated qualifications for judiciary positions. While this list is certainly abbreviated and omits various aspects of the reformation, the message of the changes ought to be clear. Kenya now has a system of checks and balances.

Only 19 years have passed since Parliament allowed a multiparty system. But, corruption abounded. This imperfect, yet tremendously positive document is a necessary step in ending years of bloodshed and destruction. Regardless of their respective political histories, Kibaki, who delivered on his electoral promise of a Constitutional renovation, and Odinga, should be commended.

Toronto’s Mayor David Miller has been named Anabolic Stories’ Person of the Week for his blunt and accurate criticism of the G-20 Summit.

Miller has implored Canada’s federal government to compensate businesses that the small group of “ideologically” idiots damaged. While Prime Minister Harper certainly discouraged and condemned the Black Bloc’s actions, the culprits are unlikely to be identified. As such, the financial responsibility ought to belong to the second most blameworthy party: the feds. Canada’s Parliament chose to hold the Summit in downtown Toronto, which was an incredibly irresponsible decision for obvious reasons. The parliamentarians either understood the potential consequences of this disruption or were too naïve to be in office. Their decisions brought the Black Bloc to Toronto.

The Mayor also noted the unproductiveness of the conference in an interview with the Toronto Star. The G-20 merely agreed on fiscal responsibility, which certainly did not vindicate mass chaos. History dictates that the promises will likely be broken.

As Anabolic Stories has continually argued, videoconference would be the most judicious and efficient meeting method. Miller’s disapproval, though it does not include using technology instead of face-to-face conferencing, echoes this corner’s concerns.

His group has been hotly criticized for creating a billboard advertisement on Billy Graham Parkway. Graham has been twelve American presidents’ spiritual adviser.

C.A.A.’s message reads: “One Nation Indivisible,” a passage from the Pledge of Allegiance. It purposely omits the “under God” clause. This latter stipulation was added at a “hot” point of the Cold War, 1954, in order to differentiate the United States from the atheist Soviet Union.

The location, though perhaps chosen for financial reasons, is irrelevant. Frankly, there is inadequate atheist and agnostic awareness.

Religion is inherently dogmatic. As such, the growing atheist community threatens religious groups. So be it! We are a society of free thought and expression and thus should not have to subscribe to any propositions.

C.A.A.’s argument is important. The United States of America constantly disrespects its non-religious citizens. “In God We Trust” is the nation’s motto and marks bills. The Ten Commandments sit outside courtrooms. And, presidents complete their addresses with “God Bless America.”

These customs are discriminatory. Secularists are a significant minority and ought to be respected. Alas, we may never have an accurate statistic to indicate the percentage of non-believers, for the oppressive system scares people into conforming.

According to the United States’ National Safety Council (NSC), June is “Safety Month.” As such, Anabolic Stories has decided to name Kathleen Rice its first “Person of the Week.” Ms. Rice is the District Attorney of Nassau County, New York. She has taken a strong stance against driving while intoxicated. In 2006, the Touro Law School alumnus successfully argued for the conviction of Martin Heidgen, who killed seven-year old Katie Flynn and her chauffeur, Stanley Rabinowitz, in a DUI-caused collision. The case is still in the appeal process. Though DUI may not constitute the strict definition of murder, Ms. Rice’s legal creativity was admirable and will hopefully lead to more stringent laws for a crime that does not receive sufficient attention.

In a press conference before this year’s Memorial Day, Rice spoke to reporters about protecting the public from drunk drivers. "I can assure you that the police are going to be out there in full force," she said. "My office will be there to prosecute every drunk driver to the fullest extent of the law."
