Reports indicate that the Minnesota Twins may sign Joe Mauer to a ten-year contract? Should any player receive contracts that long?
Answer: No
This is a simple response! The landscape in a given professional sports league is so dynamic. Not only could injuries and age derail careers, many players completely “fall off the map.” Case in point, after a promising first four seasons with the Florida Marlins, pitcher Dontrelle Willis has posted 5.17, 9.38, and 7.49 earned run averages in the past three seasons respectively. Simply put, when an athlete “loses it” his contract becomes unmovable.
So much changes in the span of ten years. Dishing out such long contracts is irresponsible. Players should not receive contracts longer than five years.

Are the Leafs done with trades now or do you believe they are still active before the trade freeze and before the trade deadline?
Roth: Burke will be quite active. Exelby, Stempniak, and Ponikarovsky will porbably be moved. John Mitchell may also be shipped off, while Finger could be waived.
