Who should replace Marco Scutaro as the Jays’ 2010 leadoff hitter?

Answer: A combination of Lyle Overbay and Jose Bautista

The most important feature of a leadoff hitter is his ability to get on base. Last season, Marco Scutaro did that well, posting a career high .379 on-base percentage. With Scutaro gone, the Jays must turn to someone else. On the surface, nobody stands out. Indeed, Adam Lind has too much power for the number one slot.

However, the split statistics dictate that a combination of Lyle Overbay (barring a trade, of course) and Jose Bautista would provide Toronto with strong leadoff hitting.

Last year, Jose Bautista had a .382 OBP against lefties, pushing his career clip to .360. His numbers against right-handed pitchers (RHP) are not impressive. Enter Overbay. In 2009, he reached based at a rate of .363 against RHP. His career OBP versus right-handers is .380. Like Bautista, the Centralia, Washington native struggles against his strong-side brethren.
